Facts and demographics
Santa Fe, Spanish for “Holy Faith,” is the capital of New Mexico. Founded in 1609, it’s the oldest capital city in the U.S.
The city has a population of about 62,000; 129,000 live in Santa Fe county. Santa Fe is located 7000 feet above sea level, between the Sangre de Cristo and Jemez mountain ranges. Nearby peaks are above 12,000 feet.
The Santa Fe area averages 300 days of sunshine, 14 inches of rain, and 17 inches of snow per year. High temperatures are usually just after midday; low is just before dawn. Evenings in Santa Fe can be cool, even in summer.
Santa Fe is a sophisticated, world-class city—named by Conde Nast Traveller magazine as the second best city to visit in the United States, just behind San Francisco. Santa Fe is the third largest art market in the nation. The city has more than 225 restaurants and 250 art galleries.
Since the 1800's, Santa Fe has been the home of three distinct cultures: Native American, Hispanic and Anglo. There are eight sovereign Indian pueblos located near Santa Fe. Indian art fills galleries and museums. Spanish influences are everywhere in Santa Fe—from art and cuisine to churches, plaza, culture, and government.
The spirit of the West is very much alive in Santa Fe. You’ll see it in dress, home décor, and attitude. There’s a sense of independence among Santa Feans. Diversity is valued and encouraged. History and tradition are part of everyday life.
Some Santa Feans trace their connections to the city back hundreds of years—but many are “transplants,” who visited our beautiful city and fell in love with it.
